4-11-05 – Investigators say the white substance that triggered the evacuation of a local newspaper turned out to only be baking powder. Police say the substance was found when an employee at the Herald Democrat opened an envelope addressed to the newspaper.
Employees were evacuated for two hours as police and fire crews secured the building.
The letter turned out to be a bill. Police contacted the person who sent it, and now believe the substance was baking powder that accidentally ended up inside the envelope.
