4-14-05 - WASHINGTON (AP) The Bic is banned and the Zippo is zapped as airlines today begin enforcing a no lighters policy aboard their planes.
It's already against the law to have lighters in checked baggage because they might start fires in cargo holds. Congress passed a bill last year adding lighters to the list of prohibited items in the cabin.
Smokers will still be able to carry up to four books of safety matches into the cabin, though smoking itself is banned.
Despite warnings over the past 45 days about the impending ban, airport officials expect to confiscate a lot of lighters in the weeks ahead, especially from foreigners who haven't heard about it.
The head of the Air Travelers Association thinks the ban is long overdue while the president of the Business Travel Coalition says it's extremely silly.
