4-15-05 – The 19th Annual Texoma Lakefest Regatta sets sail this weekend; with temperatures in the mid-70s, but winds light on Lake Texoma. Friday, winds will only reach 5 to 10 miles per hour; but they’ll pick up to 10 to 25 by this Sunday.

The official race begins at noon on Friday.

Thursday’s Chaos Cup, the corporate race, offered a preview of the festivities, “It’s quite exciting when you have 100 sails coming at you, all at once,” said Connie Oppenheimer of the Texoma Sailing Club.

Racers traveled from near and far to take part in one of the most competitive regattas in Texas and 5,000 people are expected to flock to the water’s edge to watch.

To date, the regatta has raised over one million dollars for children’s charities.

“Last year, they raised over $100,000 for the kids of Texoma and we feel this is a very worthwhile event,” said Grant Wolfe, who competed in Thursday’s Chaos Cup.

Local children will participate in several events, including Sunday’s trophy presentation.
On Saturday, races continue at 10:00 a.m.
