4-19-05 - A 9-year-old girl from Lone Grove was killed in a one car accident Monday evening. Sierra Shannon was one of three children thrown from a car after it hit a tree.
The accident happened at 7:21pm on a county road northwest of Lone Grove. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a 1993 Chevrolet 4 door, driven by Marquest J. Shannon, 18, was westbound when he swerved right to avoid an eastbound vehicle. The car ran off the roadway, overcorrected, and ran off the left side of the roadway where it struck the tree.
Five people were in the car. 16 year-old Megan J. Pickens of Ardmore was treated and released, as was Ronnie Dixon, age 16.
12-year-old Courtney S. Shannon of Lone Grove was also treated and released, despite being thrown out of the car.
Sierra was flown to Norman Regional hospital but died around 9pm.
A 5th passenger, James M. Shannon, age 15, was flown to an Oklahoma City hospital where he is in serious condition with head, trunk internal, trunk external, arm and leg injuries.
All three of the children thrown from the car were not wearing their seat belts.
