4-28-05 - The community of Oakland could face a state audit over missing money from the local cemetery. Two complaints filed with the Marshall County Sheriff last week spurred an investigation that discovered $15,000 was missing from the upkeep fund.
But there is confusion on how it might have happened. A new cemetery board was founded just a month ago, and since that time, several original board members resigned. Shortly afterwards, the money was discovered missing.
The allegations are significant enough that the district attorney and sheriff are asking for a state audit.
Oakland officials hope to have the audit resolved in 6 to 8 months.
