BTK Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

5-3-05 - WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The man accused of being the BTK serial killer has pleaded innocent to ten first-degree murder charges.

Dennis Rader appeared in a Wichita, Kansas, court this morning, where a judge entered the plea for him.

The charges stem from a string of murders that began in the 1970s. The killer taunted police with notes -- and gave himself the nickname BTK, which stands for "Bind, Torture, Kill."

Also this morning, the judge in the case set a trial date of June 27th. However, that date could be pushed back.

Because the killings were committed before the state legalized the death penalty, Rader can't be put to death if he's convicted.
