SHERMAN, TX-- For the past 6 months, four candidates have been fighting for the chance to become the Grayson County Sheriff.

Now, only two remain standing. Incumbent Sheriff Keith Gary and Commisisoner Johnny Waldrip.

"I am the leader of the floor, I came out with the largest number of votes," Gary said.

"Of course if you look at it, if you look at the numbers and the percentage, 60% of the people voted for a change," Waldrip said.

Gary received 36% of the vote and Waldrip received 30%. Since neither of them received a majority. The two will now face off in a runoff election.

"The rule is, it's gotta be 50%, plus one vote, in order to be declared the winner," explained, Republican Party Chairman, Tom Christman.

The runoff election is set for July 31st and Gary and Waldrip said it's just more time for them to campaign.

"Well we have our message that we put out and I think we need to stay on message. We need to explain to people what we want to do and the changes we want to make," explained Waldrip.

"My task now is to get out and continue to mix with the public and try to make my points and try to recruit a few more people," Gary said.

Both candidates are encouraging more people to get out and vote. Out of 72,000 registered Grayson county voters only 11,000 registered Republicans and 1,000 democrats cast ballots.

If you are a registered republican you will be able to vote July 31st in the runoff.

"one of the biggest disappointments in the race was the fact that we only had about 18% of our total voters qualified voters, eligible voters to come out and vote," Christman said. "So if there is a dark downside, it's the fact that the apathy of the voter."
