5-11-05 – Sherman Firefighters are keeping up with new technology. This week, they are learning how to rescue victims from hybrid car crashes. The part fuel, part electric engines are environmentally friendly, but pose hidden dangers to emergency workers.
Firefighters must take extra precaution when working accident scenes with these kinds of vehicles because they can cause electrocution if they are not disabled properly. Hybrid engines run quietly, making it difficult for first responders to determine if the car is still running.
All Sherman fire departments will receive the training this week. The hybrids do not pose a danger to drivers and no local EMS workers have been injured, but authorities say the training is necessary because other departments across the nation reported incidents.
