5-12-05 - A massive illegal dump in north Texas was actually a moneymaker for one landowner. Authorities say Rogelio Lopez charged roofing companies cut-rate prices for dumping millions of pounds of roofing shingles in 2 acres of his land near Valley View.
The dump wasn’t discovered until deputies caught Lopez burning one of the piles last summer. That triggered an investigation that is still going on. Lopez, and at least 3 roofing companies could face several felony charges and fines.
The good news is a roofing company out of Ohio has volunteered to clean it up – which will save the county $100,000.
