5-25-05 – The desecration of a Clayton, Oklahoma cemetery this week has town residents outraged. Residents discovered dozens of tombstones pulled from the ground and stacked in piles Monday night.
Investigators say they believe city workers removed the tombstones to get a lawnmower through tight spaces. Police Chief Carroll Sharp says he hoped the county attorney chooses to press charges.
A city employee told First News that the headstones were not removed intentionally. He said the city crew believed they were removing surface rocks from the area.
