MARIETTA, OK-- Citizens of Love county will head to the polls for the primary election Tuesday June 26. One of the biggest races, the race for sheriff and since there are no republicans running, whichever democrat wins the primary wins the office.

Both candidates facing off in this year's love county sheriff race are love county natives, incumbent sheriff Joe Russell.

" I've heard it all my life, if it's not broke don't fix it and that's the way I feel about the sheriff's office" said Russell.

And rancher Bob Burkhart.

"What you see with me is what you get, I'll tell you tomorrow what I tell you today I don't change" said Burkhart.

Sheriff Russell has almost 20 years of law enforcement experience in love county including 12 as sheriff. He said since he has been sheriff the crime rate has dropped.

"Continue working on drugs and taking our calls and working on burglaries and assisting people and helping people" said Russell.

Burkhart has 37 years of law enforcement experience and started his career in Fort Worth Texas.

"I was a robbery homicide detective spent a little over 13 years there I was one of the original members of the crime scene search unit which now today on TV is called crime scene investigation" said Burkhart.

Burkart said if elected he'll address citizens' concerns about the way current law enforcement responds to calls.

"They will call nobody shows up, no one investigates, if elected, people will show up and it will be investigated " said Burkhart.

Sheriff Russell said his deputies do respond to each and every call and they can prove it.

"The reports we've took as of today this year is 176 reports that we have filled out and have worked" said Russell.

Both candidates said it would be a privilege to serve the people of love county.

"I don't know if the people want me or not that's okay but I am going to give them the best I can if elected" said Burkhart.

"I enjoy doing stuff for people and if I can continue it I'd love to continue it and I loved to continue it and just keep being sheriff" said Russell.

My husband and father-in-law have filed multiple reports on breakins at our rural Love County property. The SD never bothered to come out and investigate. The current sheriff only cares about town happenings and the rural landowners are on their own. Time to hit the eject button on the current sheriff. I encourage all the rural landowners to back Bob Burkhart, Love County Needs Change!

I don't know why my original opinion was not posted but I will tell you all TO SPEAK FOR YOURSELVES! I can speak for myself, and the Love county Sheriff's Department went well above and beyond for this MISSISSIPPI GIRL.... i have nothing to gain or loose, but Mr. Burkhart, NO NEED TO MIS STATE THINGS AND INCLUDE PEOPLE WHO DONT WANT TO BE INCLUDED ON A FEW PEOPLES OPINIONS OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION....

The Burkhart's are part of the original settlers of Love County. The only time that Bob Burkhart was gone from there was when he moved to Ft Worth to become a police officer. He has never lied to anyone - you just may not like what he has to say. I have always been proud of my heritage and where my family came from. Reading these comments and half truths about both parties is a disgrace on Love County. There are those that have never liked any of the Burkhart's and what they stood for. That's your right. I do know that Burkhart has not made any promises that he will "WIPE OUT" all crime. But he has promised that he will do his best. Bob Burkhart is not a rookie cop and he does stand for Pride, Integrity, and Guts. He calls it like it is. If you want 4 more years of drug traffic in and around Love Co, then keep Joe. If you want someone that will work hard to stop it, vote for Bob. Its your choice.

Is it too much to ask for your sheriff to be C.L.E.E.T. certified before he ever RUNS for sheriff? I think not. How can a man say he has all this time in law enforcement when he is NOT C.L.E.E.T. certified to even work as a rookie cop much less sheriff!! This should be a no brainer vote! There isn’t but one man that is qualified to be SHERIFF that is C.L.E.E.T. Certified JOE RUSSELL!!

With the election just around the corner, here are some facts off of the C.L.E.E.T. website. Just a little FYI to all you voters in ALL counties. 390:10-1-6. Certification by Reciprocity Any officer seeking Oklahoma Peace Officer Certification, who has been certified by a state peace officer standards and training agency as a peace officer in another state, or any officer who has been certified a......s a federal peace officer by a Council recognized federal law enforcement agency, may obtain certification by reciprocity, under the following conditions: ((2) The officer must have been employed as a full time peace officer for at least three (3) months within the two (2) year period immediately preceding the request for Oklahoma certification. (3) The officer must attend training as specified by CLEET. (4) The officer must successfully pass a certification examination which is designed to be scored by functional area blocks, with the exception of skills training functional areas which shall not be tested. Officers must pass every functional area block tested at a standard prescribed by the Council. Officers may have one retest for each functional area block which they fail. (5) If an officer fails both a block test and a retest for any given functional area, then that officer must successfully complete the corresponding functional area in a CLEET Basic Academy, to include successfully passing the block examination(s). Any retest would follow the guidelines listed in OAC 390:15-1-13. For more information contact Cindy Donnelly (405) 239-5123
