AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Priscilla Owen says it's "been a long road" to the Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeals. The Texas judge took her oath of office today at the Texas Supreme Court chamber.
She was first nominated by President Bush in May 2001. The Senate confirmed her last month after Democrats and Republicans worked out a deal to end the filibuster of her nomination.
Democrats argued that Owen allowed her political beliefs to color her rulings. They were particularly critical of her decisions in abortion cases involving teenagers.
But Republicans said those criticisms were politically motivated.
