6-7-05 - A Sherman city worker made a mysterious underground find while working on a downtown sidewalk repair project several weeks ago. When the worker began drilling, he noticed the ground below the sidewalk was hollow.
City officials went down to investigate the find and discovered an old, ancient world. The narrow, underground walkway was dark and damp and had long ago been the basement of a popular department store in the early 1900s. Old staircases lead down to basement, where the remnants of old storefronts were also discovered.
The current building supervisor actually made the discovery more than a decade ago. The building owner does not have any plans to renovate the old walkway, but the city says they will try to preserve it. They'll use underground pillars to support the new sidewalk, which will not disturb the old piece of history.
