Drowning on Hugo Lake

6-8-05 - An Antlers man drowned in Hugo Lake Tuesday. Robert Michael Henson told his wife he was going swimming, but never returned. Twenty-four hours later, searchers found his body near the shore.

A husband and wife had been camping at the lake since Sunday, but when the husband went for a swim Tuesday at 2 p.m., he never returned.

By 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, she called police.

Lake Patrol began dragging the bottom of the lake, while officers called friends and family hoping they'd heard from him.

But at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lake Patrol found the body of 42-year-old Robert Michael Henson, just 15 feet from the shore.

His wife told says she thought he had just swam to an island close by.

"They had saw him swim across to the island area earlier about 1 p.m. that day and then she had seen him about 2 p.m., not far off the shore. That's the last we had reports of any sightings,” explains Huge Lake Manager Mark Ellison.

A family was camping close by and had been swimming with Henson earlier that day.

None of them noticed any type of struggle.
