Healdton city pool vandalized

HEALDTON, OK - A Texoma public pool has been hit by vandals several times over the past week, and pool staff said the repairs will cost thousands of dollars that they do not have.

What is usually a place for familes to have fun, has turned into a playground for vandals.

"They are jumping the fence, coming in pulling up chairs throwing them in the pool, taking the lifeguards seats, putting them in the pool," Healdton Industrial Authority General Manager Herb Collier said.

The Healdton city pool is owned by the HIA and Collier said the damage expenses for the recent vandalism could put them out of business for good if it doesn't stop.

"This pool operates at a loss," Collier said. "It's more of a benefit for the kids. The school's next door. They have actually been getting hit also."

"Kids I see come in, they have a whole bunch of fun here," Lifeguard Ashleah Teafatiller said. "This is where they spend time, so it would be bad if it had to be put down."

So far, no suspects have been named but the pool's staff is asking for help from the community.

"Probably some of the teenagers around this area," Teafatiller said. "Some kids like to pull pranks. I guess that's what kids do these days."

"I'm checking with kids," Collier said. "I have two daughters that are in school, they are checking with their friends, our lifeguards are 16 and 17-year-olds so they are checking with people. We are trying to get some stuff on at least a path to where we might be able to find out who is responsible for this."

The Healdton pool plans to close next week.

They will reopen July 28.
