6-14-05 - A Sherman robbery was solved this month thanks to a KXII newscast and two local departments working together. But before they could file charges, the suspect made a short-lived escape from the Bryan County jail.
It all began on June 5th when First News aired surveillance video of a man stealing lottery tickets from the Lone Star Exxon on Lamar Street. That night, a Durant officer recognized the suspect as the same man he'd arrested the night before.
John Reyes was in the Bryan County Jail, and as Sherman officers began to build their case, Reyes made a run for it. The 22-year-old out of Dallas used his restraint chains on Friday to choke a guard who was driving him back from a hospital. Reyes then kicked the guard out of the SUV and drove to Texas.
Police stopped Reyes by blocking the highway near McKinney, Texas, and he's now being held in the Collin County, Texas, jail.
Sherman filed robbery charges on Reyes on Tuesday, but that just adds to the list of assaulting an officer, burglary, elluding an officer, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Reyes will be extradited back to Bryan County sometime this week.
