6-15-05 - SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A major earthquake off the California coast caused a brief tsunami scare and evacuation last night. But authorities say some frazzled nerves were about the only casualties of the incident.
The seven-point-zero magnitude quake was about 90 miles southwest of Crescent City, which in 1964 was hit by the only known tsunami to cause deaths in the lower 48.
A tsunami warning was briefly in effect along the Pacific coast from the Mexican to Canadian borders. A California seismologist says the quake's motion appears to have been horizontal, not the vertical movement that typically leads to a tsunami.
In Crescent City, emergency officials say they had just 20 minutes to evacuate about four-thousand people. Authorities report some minor traffic accidents and phone line disruptions but no injuries.
