Local Fishermen Compete in Nat'l Tournament

6-15-05 - Two local men have qualified for a fisherman's dream vacation, one of four teams across the nation who will spend the next ten days competing in the 2005 trout bum tournament.

Though Texoma is not usually associated with the great fly fishing sites in the country, a local duo is proving that our waters are as good as any for casting a line.

Bruce Dixon, fly fisher, spends his days as a fly fishing guide on local rivers and lakes. But perhaps his greatest talent, trout bumming.

Dixon said, “A trout bum is anyone who likes to fish, and they work just enough so they can fish.

Calling themselves the Blue River Bummers, he and partner Barry Shrader of Sulphur applied for the contest sponsored by Fly Rod and Reel Magazine.

Starting Wednesday, they'll bait fish from Texas up through Missouri.

Steve Hollensed, President of Red River Fly Fishers, said, “It's a unique competition and I think Barry and Bruce are gonna do excellent at that. They have a lot of experience in fly fishing.”

They'll make five stops in 10 days, recording it all in pictures and journals.
