6-15-05 - After 47 years in Bonham, the General Cable Plant is closing.
Employees left the plant today with their heads down, some too upset to talk about it. But those who did say the news took them by surprise.
General Cable officials say the lack of demand for copper telecommunication cables produced here is forcing them to close the plant. In sixty days, production will shut down, leaving 165 employees, many who have worked here for decades, without jobs.
But 25 employees will get to stay on for six more months until they close the distribution center.
Back in August, all employees signed a one-year contract. Then six months later, some positions were terminated. But today's news still left many workers in shock.
Union representatives will meet with corporate officials tomorrow to discuss severance packages. No word yet though on what it would include.
