7-2-05 - A Grayson County firefighter was overcome battling a grass fire alone at the Grayson County airport Saturday. Jim Kyle tried to fight the fire by himself when he collapsed underneath the wing of a plane.
When emergency crews arrived, they found Kyle on his back suffering from smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. The incident happened around one p.m. on the north end of the airport.
Authoities say Kyle was on duty by himself and responded to a grass fire near a storage shed. Airport officials say Kyle kept the fire from spreading to the shed which was full of old airplane parts, but became overheated in the process.
It took several minutes for emergency crews to get to the injured firefighter because of access gates at the airport. Kyle is recovering at Texoma Medical Center in Denison.
Fire investigators are still investigating the cause of the fire.
