BELLS, TX - Students in bells may soon see some improvements to their school. Bells Independent School District is asking for a $7.25 million dollar bond.
Residents got the chance to voice their opinions about the issue and Mystic Matthews has more.
The school board decided Monday night take the bond to the taxpayers. Bells ISD officials say they need the money in order to update their existing schools.
They explained why they need residents help to make it happen. Neighbors who attended the meeting all wanted to know more about the proposed bond.
It will go to vote in May of this year and if it passes, the money will go toward building new classrooms, a new gym and adding on to what is already there.
The money will also be used to install a state of the art security system.
Bells Superintendent Joe Moore says if the bond passes, taxes would go up, but at most, 18 cents.
Moore says the increase would be worth it in the long run. "About 8 classrooms in portable buildings and we're to the point that we either have to spend money on portable buildings or build facilities."
Bells resident Jerry Powers says, “I think this will be a good thing for Bells. I thing it will be good for our growth. And I think as I city continues to grow it will be good for us."
Moore says if the bond passes in May, construction could start as early as June and the facilities could be complete by fall of 2009.
