Free Rides End for Some VA Patients

7-6-05 - Hundreds of local veterans count on transportation provided by the Bonham and Dallas VA hospitals to get to their appointments. But that convenience will be ending for some of them.

VA workers made over 600 trips just last month to pick up patients from their homes. Until now, they’ve never turned anyone away. But because of shrinking budgets, the VA is enforcing rules already in place that only allow special transportation for patients that are at least 30-percent disabled.

While not everyone is eligible for transportation, most patients can get travel pay, which provides gas money for those who drive themselves and carpool.
