7-7-05 - WASHINGTON (AP) Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff confirms that the terror alert is being raised to code-orange, or high, for mass transit systems.
The decision follows today's deadly subway and bus bombings in London.
Chertoff says the higher alert will apply to regional and intercity passenger rail systems, and to subways and metropolitan bus systems. He says there's "no specific, credible information" suggesting that an attack in the US is imminent.
Chertoff says he's not suggesting that people avoid the transit systems -- but instead that they use them with "an increased awareness of their surroundings."
