7-13-05 A Gainesville man is accused of using an assault-style rifle to open fire on a Cooke County home Wednesday morning, killing Melvin Jay Tamplin. Deputies suspect it was part of an on-going feud.
Salvatore Calabrese is charged with murder. Deputies say he fired at least ten shots from an SKS 7.62mm rifle at the home on county road 123. He was arguing with men at the home moments before the shooting.
Tamplin, 30, was hit in the head and died at the scene. No one else was wounded.
Calabrese drove to a convenience store in Oak Ridge after the shooting where he told a clerk that he had been involved in a shooting and to call 911. Authorities arrested him moments later.
