DURANT, OK - We told you Monday night about residents at Crescent Creek Apartments in Durant being forced to move out. But now, we hear from the manager of that property.

Tenants say they didn't receive enough notice and now the complex manager explains why they're turning off the utilities.

Residents at Crescent Creek had a lot to say. Some of them upset with the complex's owner, others who are only mad they have to leave.

"This place been home the past two years." Brad Hill is living at Crescent Creek while he finishes school, and he only has six weeks left. But Wednesday, he begins the end of his senior year in college, without utilities.

A choice that he says wasn't his. "If I move out, I have to move home and won't be able to finish school."

The Department of Housing and Urban Development ended its section eight contract with the owners of Crescent Creek, after officials say the apartment complex failed inspection. So people were told to find a new place to live.

Crescent Creek Manager Susan Harrit says the owner is letting people stay at their current rent price, but the complex is operating in the red.

Harrit says, “The monthly bills are $45-50,000 a month. So he stretched it as far as he could and depleted his own personal accounts, and he just can't do it anymore."

Harrit says owner Steve Reynolds is being forced to shut off the utilities because he owes $16,000. But she says the complex will stay open for now.

Harrit says, “I will still be here. There are a lot of residences that don't want to leave. They are filling up their bathtubs and sinks getting ready to not have water."

Hill says he has friends to help him out, “I could, because ask and you shall receive, but I don't want to be a burden."

So for now Hill says, "I’m hoping I have enough jugs of water saved up."

Most residents say they don't think enough notice was given about the water, sewer and gas getting shut off, but Harrit says she been giving notices since January for people to start paying since HUD wouldn't be. She says because most didn't pay, it's come down to this.

" God bless the "angel(s)" who swept in and saved the helpless of Crescent Creek once again! But, who is going to pay their water and gas bills next month, and the months to follow? The $16,000.00 donated should have been used to train these tenants with an employable skill. "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him to fish and he will eat for life!" My children and I both went to school with many of the tenants out there and there are many, NOT`ALL, who just do not want to work! Just because you have a young child does not mean you can't work!! Here's a thought......Get a job and pay your own bills! There are many tenants out there who have young children, lay around the house all day long drawing every kind of assistance available, won't work but can be heard talking about going to the local kareoke bar every weekend. How is that possible?? This has to be stopped! I have seen this happen time and time again. If I was Steve Reynolds, I wouldn't pay one more dime on those apts. and force the scum out!! "

I lived in those apartments in the 70s. We were married with a baby and most of the other residents were college students and working class. We took pride in our new unit and stayed for four years, paying our own rent. I moved away and upon arriving and reading the papers, couldn't believe the condition and activity there. It's time to take them down and clean up the south side. I haven't been near there in 15 years ... out of fear.

These are some of the funniest comments I have read. That apartment complex has been a slum since I was a kid. Different owner same renting low lives (not all but 95% or so). And to the resident who told everyone to suck it - maybe if you didn't suck it, you wouldn't be in the situation you are in now. I guess you expect us to support your children when they grow up and rent there too!

After seeing some of the women that live there, here is an idea. Make them get their fat butts on a bike and generate some electricity.

TO ME FROM DURANT AND REDNECK WOMEN - WELL SAID!!

Mark and Jason. This should show just how smart you are. HUD didnt change their mind. Section 8 is the one who pulled their contract, HUD stepped in to help and said they wouldnt pay the rent for those apts, however because of tenants petitioning HUD said as long as the units will pass the inspection they would pay. So for the month of Feb. and March rent should have been paid by the tennants and it was not. So now they are being forced to leave but it is really the tenants problem for not payin what they owe.

Dear Residents. Its called "lifes not fair". Get used to it.

Tight A? Who are you calling a tight a? I just resent the fact that even though you may work, you prob still get some forms of assistance...WIC, Medicaid, TANF, Foodstamps, etc. The rest of us, however, who you have told so elequently to " suck it", have to pay our own bills, buy our own food, and fork out hundreds of dollars in insurance every month. What is the taxpayers and the government suddenly told you to " SUCK IT"! Go move in with one of your baby momma's or baby daddie's, whichever the case may be. Stop living off of us!!!

Im so sick of hearing about this place and the people that "live" there.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 26, 2008 at 01:21 PM
Resident, just because there are small handful of residents there that have jobs, doesn't mean the rest of them aren't living off government handouts.

Wondering from southside - VERY FUNNY!! I can't stop laughing. What is sad is, it is the true world we are living in today. Also to Resident from CC - You are a prime example of why everyone is so upset about losers getting assistance. First, your grammar is horrible. Second, the last comment you made shows your ignorance. Most of the residents at CC, including yourself, expect something for nothing. You say that "all the tight-A brown nosing people can suck it." Does that mean the tax payers are tight A's because they don't want to pay YOUR rent? Talk about tight A's - you don't even pay your own rent. Now how am I the tight A???? Get a grip on reality and support yourself. The tax payers are not the problem; losers like yourself are!!

If they close Crescent Creek, where can I buy my crack cocaine? And I'll need some weed before Tuesday. I'll have to be stoned to vote for the sales tax increase.

Okay on Jan 16th KXII reported HUD was not renewing the contract. On Jan 17th KXII reported in a follow up "The complex received a letter Thursday stating that Housing and Urban Development had reversed the decision to pull their contract." So what is really going on here?

Posted by: Jason Location: Madill on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Didn't they first tell them HUD wasn't renewing their contract then a couple days later HUD was going to renew. Now this article says HUD is back to not renewing the contract?

As a resident for 3 yrs with kids I find most of the comments very mean and uncalled for. I have worked the whole time I've leaves here, but see here lies the problem........All the tight- A**, brown nosing people who want to judge us cause of where were from you can SUCK IT!!

Must be that sense of entitlement... people having received Section 8 housing and feeling like they shouldn't have to pay any rent at all.
