Hurricane Warning Issued for South Texas

7-19-05 - SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) A hurricane warning was issued today for the lower Texas Gulf Coast as Hurricane Emily approaches.

The warning is in effect for Padre Island and coastal areas from Port Mansfield south to the Mexico border. A hurricane watch remains in effect north of Port Mansfield to Baffin Bay.

South Texas residents are boarding up windows, stacking sandbags and moving their RVs from harm's way.

Cameron County park Ranger Arnold Flores spend the day yesterday trying to move the last of the die-hard campers from a park on the edge of South Padre Island's beach.

Emily slammed into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula early yesterday with strong winds, leaving behind flooding and other damage. Forecasters expected it to intensify again over the Gulf of Mexico and hit the northeastern Mexican coast "as a major hurricane" as early as Tuesday night.

Governor Rick Perry has activated 225 Texas Army National Guard soldiers in case they're needed for hurricane duty. A hundred Texas State Guard personnel were on standby.
