Sherman High Rated Unacceptable

8-2-05 - Texas Education Commissioner Shirley Neeley announced Monday that more schools and districts received the state's lowest rating this year - including Sherman High School.

It received an academically unacceptable rating. 4.6% of individual schools in Texas received the lowest rating.

Neeley says student performances on math and science tests are
major reasons. Sixty-one districts were labeled academically unacceptable.

It compares with 24 districts that got the lowest rating last
year. The number of individual schools with the bottom ranking also
increased, from 95 last year -- to 364 this year.

Nine school districts and one charter operator received the
highest rating -- exemplary. Most districts and campuses are rated acceptable -- including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

Among the districts rated unacceptable are Galveston, El Paso,
Beaumont and now-closed Wilmer Hutchins. The Dallas school board last month decided to accept Wilmer-Hutchins students for the coming school year.
