Gumm Named ORA's Legislator of the Year

8-23-05 - Senator Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant, received the Oklahoma Rifle Association's 2005 Legislator of the Year award at the Oklahoma Rifle Association (ORA) annual banquet Saturday.

ORA is an affiliate organization of the National Rifle Association.

According to a press release from the organization, the lawmaker was recognized because of his "staunch and steadfast" defense of the Second Amendment. This included writing and passing into law a number of bills including the "Gun Manufacturers' Recruitment Act."

That law made both statewide and national news, and was featured on the National Rifle Association's NRANews Internet and national radio broadcast.

The measure was one of the bills cited by Charles Smith, ORA executive director, when he announced Gumm as the award winner.

"Since arriving in the Senate, Senator Gumm has been at the forefront for gun owners and the Second Amendment," Smith said. "Every gun owner, every hunter owes this gentleman a huge debt."

The lawmaker, himself a life member of the National Rifle Association, said he was honored by the selection.

"Standing up for the constitutional right to keep and bear arms is part of my duty as senator," Gumm said. "Firearms are part of our heritage, and for as long as I serve as senator I will work to ensure they are part of our future - including our economic future."

This is the latest in a string of honors for Gumm, elected in 2002 to represent all of Bryan, Johnston and Marshall counties, most of Coal County and a portion of Atoka County. He has received the Oklahoma Public Employees Association Senator of the Year award and the Higher Education Alumni Council named him Newcomer of the Year.

The state Court Appointed Special Advocate Program for children and the Citizens for the Protection of the Arbuckle-Simpson Aquifer have also recognized Gumm's work in the Senate.
