ARDMORE, Okla. -- It was a packed house in Ardmore Tuesday as the Young Women’s Christian Association held its annual fundraiser. It may have even been the hottest ticket in town. Robin Beal reports.

The keynote speaker at the event was one of Ardmore’s favorite daughters, Rue McClanahan, star of television’s “The Golden Girls.”

McClananhan, an Ardmore High School graduate, was elated to be back on her old stomping grounds.

"Oh it's so much fun to see people again," she said Tuesday.

McClananhan saw hundreds of people Tuesday from old friends and fans to people from the community, all came out to meet, and greet, and have lunch for the good of the YWCA and the work they do.

Tuesday’s event was all about living.

"Ms. McClananhan, who is our keynote speaker today, is a breast cancer survivor, as I am, and it is to bring awareness for this program. We have provided over 4,000 free mammograms to uninsured and unemployed women over the last 18 years. "

McClananhan is perhaps best known for her role as ‘Blanche’ on the television show, “The Golden Girls.” I sat down with Rue McClananhan, and talked about everything from Ardmore, to her battle with breast cancer and found out she is much more than just a pretty face- she is an elegant and wise lady.

What’s one bit of free advice from Rue McClananhan that you would give up and coming young women out there who may be watching this today? What's the best thing they can do to take charge of their lives?"

"Before you make any major decision, stop and say to yourself, ‘Let me think about it, let me give that some thought.’ Don't be buffaloed into decisions. Just say I’m sorry I can't make that decision right now, I’ve got to think about it. I didn't know that until about yesterday. You have to do that or you're going to find yourself in such hot water, because you might make a hasty decision and it may be the wrong one. I'm thinking mostly in terms of the romantic arena, but you know that works for jobs, it works for career choices, it works for choosing schools, it works for everything. You have to stop and think about it. That's very important," McClanahan said.

It was a great day for the YWCA and the ladies who got to attend. Tuesday's focus was breast cancer awareness.
