10-18-05 - Two men who crashed a student party after a University of Texas football game stabbed five people before fleeing, police say.
Four strangers showed up about 2 a.m. Sunday at the apartment where best friends Laura Rowe and Lindsey Tauch threw a party. Rowe said she asked the men to leave, and a fight erupted.
Two of the party crashers pulled out knives and stabbed five people, covering the exterior hallway in blood, she said.
"It was really bad," Rowe was quoted as saying in Tuesday's Austin American-Statesman. "Those thugs were looking for a fight. People were just gushing blood."
Tauch was stabbed in the stomach and rushed to Brackenridge Hospital, where she was in good condition Monday. Two victims were not taken to a hospital, and two others were treated at Brackenridge and released Sunday.
Austin Police Department spokeswoman Toni Chovanetz said police are seeking suspects.
Rowe, 20, who like Tauch is a UT sophomore, said the strangers did not look like college students.
The stabbings took place at Town Lake Apartments. Rowe said she chose to live there because the rent was lower than at places closer to campus, but now she plans to move as soon as she can.
Asset Campus owns Town Lake Apartments. The company's regional supervisor, David Neef, said management has emphasized security since it took over the gated complex in April 2004. Vehicles must have access devices to enter, and a code must be entered to open the gate.
Asset also hired a security service to patrol the property each night, a move he said has significantly decreased break-ins.
"We've never had any kind of violent incidents of this nature before," Neef said. "Our biggest frustration is that we wish we could have a larger police presence in that whole entire area. We plan on working with APD as close as we can."
