8-26-05 – The Friday night lights are back on in Texas, and in the spirit of football schools across the region are getting ready. Concession stands are stocked; banners are painted and hung through school halls, and perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in the town of Gainesville.
In the midst of a summer that couldn’t get any hotter, tonight is the Sizzle Bowl in Gainesville. A banner on California Street in downtown Gainesville welcomes a team from the same state: the Scotts Valley Falcons.
For three months the Gainesville Leopards Football Booster Club has been preparing for this game. T-shirts, newspaper advertisements, and circus-style can be seen around town. This is the first time a team from California will play in Gainesville.
“Probably in the history of Texas football, we've only played California a handful of times. We not only have the game but pride in the state of Texas on the line,” says Doug Wade, Secretary for the Booster Club.
The high school hopes to break an attendance record with 7,000 to 8,000 fans at the game tonight. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m at Leeper Stadium.
