MARSHALL COUNTY, OK - Deputies in Marshall County spent the day arresting residents. But it wasn't for any crime, it was to raise money. Stephanie Brletic has the details.
"Guilty as charged."
It might look like a regular arrest, but it's actually a fundraiser for the Marshall County Relay For Life Team called Edy's Angels.
The namesake, the Sheriff's wife who is suffering from cancer.
The deputies spent the day, arresting residents, then booking them into the jail, where they had to use their own money to bail themselves out.
Dispatcher Alisha Rushing says today's “jail-and-bail” was a great way to help fund their team. "It's fun. Everybody's really having a blast with it. The companies were going back and forth multiple times to the jail and to the company. People are having a good time arresting their bosses and seeing them taken away in the car."
Some detainees had pre-paid ten-dollar "warrants" out for their arrest and knew they were going to be taken into custody.
Rick Lane, President of First United Bank says he was happy to be part of the fundraiser. "It's always good to help out and relay for life is such a great cause because cancer is such a terrible disease, it touches so many people."
Still, he says the event was more real than he expected and wasn't prepared for the actual arrest. "I didn't really think they'd come and actually put the cuffs on me. I didn't really like that and it's a little crowded in the back of the squad car. I've never been in that position before. Maybe I'll try to avoid that in the future!"
Other people were even more surprised, because they didn't get advance warning about the arrests. They were just picked up and taken to jail.
“I knew nothing about this."
At the jail, the suspects could plead guilty, landing them a $20 fine. Or they could plead not-guilty, landing them a $30 fine.
The Sheriff's Office raised at least $1200 for May 9th’s Relay For Life at the Madill High School track.
Relay for Life begins next Friday at 7 p.m.
