Evacuees Enroll in Texoma Colleges

9-15-05 - Hundreds of college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina are finding ways to continue their education, often times with the help of local educators.

Three college students from Louisiana are enrolled in classes at Grayson County College this fall. The school has agreed to waive tuition fees to help these students stay on track.

Erica Waldon is one of those students. She had just started her first week of classes at Southern New Orleans University when she had to evacuate. At first, she wasn't worried, but after the storm hit, her school was badly damaged and she didn't have a place to go.

The sophomore ended up in North Texas and at Grayson County College. In addition to waiving tuition fees, Grayson County College has also waived housing fees for students who transferred from schools damaged in the hurricane. The school is helping students get in touch with agencies that can help pay for other necessities like food and clothing.

Other area schools have also accepted students from Louisiana and Mississippi. Southeastern in Durant has enrolled two students and Austin College in Sherman has one.
