10-3-05 - University of Oklahoma officials say a student who was killed when an explosive attached to his body detonated near a packed football stadium had "emotional difficulties."

The FBI says 21-year-old Joel Henry Hinrichs, III was killed last night when the device detonated around 8 PM.

OU President David Boren told reporters that Hinrichs had emotional difficulties in the past. Boren says there's no evidence pointing to any other kind of motivation other than his personal problems.

Hinrichs was a mechanical engineering major from Colorado
Springs, Colorado. His father, Joel Henry Hinrichs Junior, told The
Associated Press says he communicated with his son and nothing
seemed out of the ordinary. He says his son was a very intelligent
and private individual who somehow lost the confidence that his
life would be a good one.

Authorities haven't identified what kind of explosive device was
used.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officers have evacuated part of the
student apartment complex where Hinrichs stayed. Boren says about
40 people were told to leave and not to return for at least a day.
