HUGO, Okla. -- The victim of a double shooting in Hugo is speaking out. Deborah McKenzie says she was shot by her own stepfather after he allegedly shot and killed her sister.

We had a chance to talk to Deborah as she recalled exactly what happened, how her family is coping after her stepfather was charged with murder, and how she wants her sister to be remembered.

"So we don't know why. She can't ask anymore but I don't understand why?!"

Deborah McKenzie's right arm propped in a sling, suffering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder.

She is healing physically, but those wounds are superficial compared to the emotional anguish she experiences.

"I guess in shock a bit about having someone want to kill you and then you think a stepfather?"

56-year-old Deborah and her 63-year-old sister, Jackie Mae Endemano, arrived in Hugo, their birthplace, on April 29. Their mother, Esta, lived with her husband Coy Tate since marrying him in 2000.

Deborah says she received word that over time, Esta's health was deteriorating.

"My sister got that call, and my brother got that call. My sister and I talked and when you get that call, you go check on your mother."

Deborah says each day, she, Jackie, and Esta would visit in their motel room. Then Thursday May 1st, the daughters met Esta's nurse at home.

They asked to receive her doctor's information from Coy, in case something happened to him. She says he became agitated and excused himself to the bathroom.

"The next thing I hear is gunshot."

Deborah says she turned around to shield her mom from danger. “There were a couple and I'm thinking, 'Oh my gosh, it's not stopping.' I stood up and turned around, got hit in the shoulder, and there he is, fumbling with a pistol. He never said anything."

Deborah ran outside, bleeding on her right side.

"God sends angels in many forms. And Jerry Norfield was one of them."

A man in an SUV drove by, picked her up, and drove her to the hospital. A family member later told Deborah her sister Jackie did not survive the gunshots, a shocking blow.

"She was just a very giving, loving Christian woman; which is another reason why I don't understand why he felt the need to do what he did with her, or me."

Their mom is now in care of family members in Hugo, recovering, as Deborah relies on her faith in God to navigate through the troubling time.

You people who think Coy should be out of jail are amazing! He shot and killed a woman in the head...how do you condone this? You're all sick. I know for a fact that Jackie did communicate with her mom on a regular basis and her and her sister would never have brought their mom back to Ca if she didn't want to go. PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU POST...people are mourning losses all around because of this tragedy...have you nothing better to do than stir up trouble? Are you all that bored in OK? "Coy was a great man" yeah, a "great" man...with a gun who made a bad choice. He murdered someone senselessly...there are NO EXCUSES for his actions. From reading all these stupid comments I now know why Jackie wasn't looking forward to going back to her home town...most of you are....can't find a word that I want to type. She wanted to see her mom and come home.

Quote from other people- Her and her sister should never have gone to Hugo. She should be the one in Jail. Coy is a great Man.---and also-----He knows he made a mistake but whatever happened to second chances.------MY comment yeah that is the ticket. Shoot people with the attempt to kill someone and also kill someone. Oh yeah he deserves to be free. Whatever you crazy people. WHATEVER!!!!!

How many of you that think their marriage was to awesome knew that shortly BEFORE the sisters arrived in OK that Estha (this is the correct spelling by the way) had told Coy that she made a big mistake marrying him in the first place!!! And why did Coy get so upset that day when the nurse was there and the sisters asked the nurse for the names of Estha's doctors and medication information. They told Coy they needed that information in case he was to become gravely ill. He was the only one besides the nurse who had that information. They were not there to make their mother leave forever, they asked her if she wanted to go back to California for a vacation and then someone would help bring her back. GET ALL OF THE FACTS RIGHT!!!!! Some people are so narrow minded that it is unbelieveable.

I know one thing if my stepfather killed my sister that would be the last time he would see day light, you people on here trying to defend him he shot his step daughter and then killed the other one he should be in jail and stay there until he dies

let him go

I'm Sorry but Deborah McKenzie is a lair. She knows she was in the wrong. Her and her sister should never have gone to Hugo. She should be the one in Jail. Coy is a great Man. Has never shown anger to anyone. He had to have felt threatened to shoot someone. He is kind and loving. I say free Coy. He knows he made a mistake but whatever happened to second chances. Coy my prayers are with you and Esta

Why do you people think Coy was goint to die! Unless the evil stepdaughters planned it. Do you think the lady is going to tell the truth! No! With Coy locked up she gets her wish! You should be careful of what you wish for! Her sister and her started this mess.

People should not make statments until they have been in the shoes of those girls! If the did not care for their mother they would not have come that far away to try to help her. That is HUGO, they will not do anything to him. He will be free just like all the drug people that get picked up and are back on the streets. The only people that will be hurt are the ones that have lost Jackie.

Although he didn't handle the situation correctly one has to ask why he felt so threatened. Did they come to take over her care with no regards to him? How long had it been since they had had any contact with their mother? Again what he did was terrible, and I'm not condoning his actions, but maybe, just maybe they were letting him know that he had no say about his wifes care. These kind of people are out there. They want nothing to do with their parents until they are unable to care for themselves, then they want to come and take over. Maybe there was some kind of inherentance involved. I'm like others, let's hear both sides of the story. May God bless this whole family.

Let's see if I have this right; one daughter dead, one daughter shot, Husband/step father in jail and Mom/wife is . . ,? So obviously he was thinking of his own feeling to leave his wife without anyone. AS it stands now Esta will probably go back to CA with the surviving daughter. So, other than making himself a murderer - what did he accomplish? I find it hard to feel sorry for him.

Sure he overreacted, but just how hard was he being pushed? I bet he felt threatened, and in his own home. Who of us would just let that fly? Not one of us was there, how will we ever know what really went down? Possibly we won't. Apparently even the news station isn't hearing his side. My condolences to the whole family

What made them think something was going to happen to Coy! Where was the home health nurse during all of this! And, most people do not annouce when they are going to the bathroom. What they say to make the man mad! Something is not on the level.

For all of those who are defending the actions of Coy Tate, remember the verse in the Bible that states "for he who is without sin, let him cast the first stone". Facts are that Coy shot 2 unarmed defenseless women, killing one of them. Regardless of what led him to do it, that is a FACT that cannot be denied.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: California on May 8, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Coy Tate will get his chance to tell HIS side of the story, in court. But will Jackie Endemano's voice ever be heard again? No, not by her son, her husband or the many friends at school and church who miss her. Coy chose to end a life in a most cowardly way...by shooting someone in the BACK of the head. There is no defense for that...none. So he took good care of Esta? What has he done for her now? Taken her daughter and himself away. The shame lies not with Jackie or Debra.

I agree he totally handled things very wrong, but why aren't we hearing his side of the story? The step-daughter is not telling the whole story. Watch her face when she talks. People expressions say a lot more than their words.

ok....why should the daughters feel ashamed? have i missed something? seems like they went to check on their ill mother and got shot for it. if someone knows the "whole story" as they claim i would love to hear why they think it ok to shoot and kill your own family members

Posted by: Judy Location: SC on May 8, 2008 at 08:07 AM
If Jackie and Debra felt the need to come and take care of their Mother because she was ill, why didn't they come and get her when she turned ill about a few years ago. Coy had been taking wonderful care of her, all that time. I'm surprised that 2 Christians would try to seperate two people very much in love. I pray that Estha will be able to get back home where she wants to be, in Hugo, with the wonderful man she married. Coy and Estha spoke very highly of each other and you don't do that when you want to leave. I am praying for all concerned in this terrible tragedy. peace be with them all in their time of need.

I can't believe that someone would even "justify" someone choosing to "murder" someone. This lady, is a wife, mother, and friend whom won't be there when her son gets married, won't get to be a grandmother and won't grow old with her husband...have you thought of the lost. Coy had the choice...he chose a gun and a an end result that was "final"...and he should pay the price for his actions.

I dont think this news station cares much for Hugo. After all they reported bad things about our school and the mold. No one ever asked how our children or teachers felt about the forced move. Nor, was there a follow up on how our children and teachers like being back in the school. That is after they had finished the move. So why would they report both sides of the story. After all if they tell just the evil stepsisters side then Hugo looks bad! Look into this womens eyes as she tells her story. You can see something is not right!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 04:54 PM
yes we would like to hear the whole story from him,it's not fair to let the stepdaughter tell her side and not him.the stepdaughters are more to blame than he is.they should be ashame of theirselfs.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Finally, some news. Hope this lays all the speculation to rest (but I doubt it)

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Coy & Esta are members of our church so I know them. I do not know Esta's daughters, but they sound like they have been wonderful people. First of all let me say that we all hate this so much for the ENTIRE family, no matter how you look at this situation it is so terrible. I would like to know, however why the other side of the story is not going to be told on the news? Not to say that shooting these ladies was okay, in any way, but I do feel like it is important for all sides to be told. As we all understand it, Coy felt like they were there to take Esta back with them. I think he may have felt threatened and helpless and picked the worst way possible way to resolve the problem. I also think it is very important to say that Coy took Wonderful care of Esta especially after her health changed. This is not a justification at all, I would just like for his voice to be heard. I know there are a lot of people praying for everyone involved, and we are very sorry and saddened by this tragedy.
