HUGO, Okla. -- The victim of a double shooting in Hugo is speaking out. Deborah McKenzie says she was shot by her own stepfather after he allegedly shot and killed her sister.
We had a chance to talk to Deborah as she recalled exactly what happened, how her family is coping after her stepfather was charged with murder, and how she wants her sister to be remembered.
"So we don't know why. She can't ask anymore but I don't understand why?!"
Deborah McKenzie's right arm propped in a sling, suffering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder.
She is healing physically, but those wounds are superficial compared to the emotional anguish she experiences.
"I guess in shock a bit about having someone want to kill you and then you think a stepfather?"
56-year-old Deborah and her 63-year-old sister, Jackie Mae Endemano, arrived in Hugo, their birthplace, on April 29. Their mother, Esta, lived with her husband Coy Tate since marrying him in 2000.
Deborah says she received word that over time, Esta's health was deteriorating.
"My sister got that call, and my brother got that call. My sister and I talked and when you get that call, you go check on your mother."
Deborah says each day, she, Jackie, and Esta would visit in their motel room. Then Thursday May 1st, the daughters met Esta's nurse at home.
They asked to receive her doctor's information from Coy, in case something happened to him. She says he became agitated and excused himself to the bathroom.
"The next thing I hear is gunshot."
Deborah says she turned around to shield her mom from danger. “There were a couple and I'm thinking, 'Oh my gosh, it's not stopping.' I stood up and turned around, got hit in the shoulder, and there he is, fumbling with a pistol. He never said anything."
Deborah ran outside, bleeding on her right side.
"God sends angels in many forms. And Jerry Norfield was one of them."
A man in an SUV drove by, picked her up, and drove her to the hospital. A family member later told Deborah her sister Jackie did not survive the gunshots, a shocking blow.
"She was just a very giving, loving Christian woman; which is another reason why I don't understand why he felt the need to do what he did with her, or me."
Their mom is now in care of family members in Hugo, recovering, as Deborah relies on her faith in God to navigate through the troubling time.
