Mother's Day is just two days away, and while many people are scrambling to get last-minute cards and gifts, one local man found a creative way to honor his mom. Stephanie Brletic has the story.

Cecil Berryman's mom is not your average woman. She's a hero and a survivor, and to celebrate her, he dedicated his first 100 mile-bike ride from Dallas to Ardmore.

"My mom means everything to me," Cecil says.

Cecil Berryman's admiration for his mom, Paulette, inspired Friday’s 100-mile journey. Aside from being a Mother's Day tribute, this ride has another meaning. Berryman's 58-year-old mother is a five year survivor of breast cancer so he's using his ride to raise awareness of the disease and the work of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

"They have endangered so far as technology and early detection for women and it just seems like it's crucial because it's silent. It's a silent killer."

Berryman says his mother is amazing, a single woman who raised four children, doing whatever she had to do to support her family and has continued to persevere, actively fighting cancer for two years before getting healthy.

"She really set the bar high for the children because whenever we have it bad, you look back and see what she went through, working two jobs, going through chemo, still working, bruises on her feet. She never gave up, she kept working to provide for her family."

Berryman says his bike ride is a small way to recognize his mother's sacrifices, but says even though he trained for the journey, this is twice the distance he's ever traveled on his six-pound bike. And even with his friend driving a car behind him, he says navigating the highways has been nerve-wracking.

"Yes, I do get a little nervous because the shoulders, sometimes there's no shoulder and we have to drive past the shoulder. Sometimes the shoulder is very badly damaged and sometimes I have to get into the street and ride real fast before cars come."

Berryman kicked off his trip this morning from Plano. He's been taking breaks on and off throughout the day and expects to arrive in Ardmore early Friday evening.

Maybe the best part of this gift is while Paulette knows her son is riding for breast cancer, she does not know that the trip is also honoring her, or that she will be presented with a plaque to commemorate her sacrifices when he arrives.
