BONHAM, Tex. -- Many people have pets in their homes, and many might say they enrich their lives. Still, most pet owners don't need to turn their house into a shelter.
That's what happened to one woman in Bonham. When Brenda Neely moved to town 3 years ago, she knew she was getting a new house, but didnt' realize her live was about to change. Fastfoward to now: Neely is running a pet rescue and adoption shelter.
"A dog shelter was at the bottom of my list. I've always had a lot of pets, but it wasn't until they started getting dumped there," Neely said, referring to the dozens of animals that are regularly dumped at her 6 acre property.
It didn't take long for the situation to multiply. At first she just cared for and then found homes for the animals. But this past January, she started her own shelter to handle the load, and currently has over 140 dogs, and even a few horses and donkeys.
"They're living breathing things with feelings, they cry like people do, you know what I mean? And to just dump them like people do on the side of the road because you didn't have the 50 dollars to get your dog neutered or spayed in ridiculous," Neely said.
The project has also become a family affair, with her children doing everything from taking care of sick animals to helping socialize them.
"I love these dogs, these dogs are my babies, every one of them. These guys are sweet and they don't deserve what they go through."
