BONHAM, Tex. -- Many people have pets in their homes, and many might say they enrich their lives. Still, most pet owners don't need to turn their house into a shelter.

That's what happened to one woman in Bonham. When Brenda Neely moved to town 3 years ago, she knew she was getting a new house, but didnt' realize her live was about to change. Fastfoward to now: Neely is running a pet rescue and adoption shelter.

"A dog shelter was at the bottom of my list. I've always had a lot of pets, but it wasn't until they started getting dumped there," Neely said, referring to the dozens of animals that are regularly dumped at her 6 acre property.

It didn't take long for the situation to multiply. At first she just cared for and then found homes for the animals. But this past January, she started her own shelter to handle the load, and currently has over 140 dogs, and even a few horses and donkeys.

"They're living breathing things with feelings, they cry like people do, you know what I mean? And to just dump them like people do on the side of the road because you didn't have the 50 dollars to get your dog neutered or spayed in ridiculous," Neely said.

The project has also become a family affair, with her children doing everything from taking care of sick animals to helping socialize them.

"I love these dogs, these dogs are my babies, every one of them. These guys are sweet and they don't deserve what they go through."

Re: msg from x about dog/cat food donations. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (7th at Star St) has been asking for and receiving dog/cat food from other churches and individuals in the community for months. Donations can be dropped off at our church on Wed. evenings and noon on Sundays. Classified ads are in the Bonham Journal and NTX-enews. Dry or canned food, and cleaning supplies are gratefully received and taken to the so-called "shelter" at the end of Elm Street, a concrete bldg with no windows, a place that should be on the conscience of every person in Fannin County.

God bless this wonderful woman. These type people are on top of the list in my book . I wish people would not throw away dogs like yesterdays trash or move off and let them to fend for themselves . I always wonder what goes thru a dogs mind when you dump them and drive off its heartbreaking to see a dog wondering looking for food and even worse fighting the elements of someones stupidity they seem to always do fundraisers for food for people I wish more would do the same for dog food

Tracy, my sentiments exactly!!! This person IS in fact a good human being. If I could afford it myself, I would convert my 10 acres into a dog shelter with fencing, housing and even heating and AC. And then try to find homes for them. I need to win to lotto!!!

It's not that people don't have $50 to get their dog spayed or neutered, you get all the men who don't want to get their dogs neutered because it will make them less masculine (dumbest thing I've ever heard) or you get the people who want their female dogs to be able to have a litter of puppies someday that they can sell off and make a "quick buck", not realizing how much work it is or how hard it is to sell or get rid of the puppies...

Shelter or personal pets? If a shelter then why did you not give out contact information? Do you have any contact information? If so, please e-mail it to me. Thanks
