CHICAGO -- The next time you're on the expressway and you see a guy in a three-year-old Honda doing the speed limit, keeping to the right line and rarely touching his brakes, it might be a guy from Wadsworth, Ill. His creeping along might tick you off, but he's getting great gas mileage.

Wayne Gerdes' standard engine 2005 Honda Accord has an average EPA mileage rating of 25 miles per gallon. Gerdes almost doubles that. His average is 48 miles per gallon. Gerdes is the guru of what he calls "hypermiling."

"I used to be the 'A' type personality, left hand lane, passing everybody, going down I-94 at 80 miles an hour, then 9/11 happened," Gerdes said.

No longer willing to pour as much money into Mideast oil, Gerdes started his own website called CleanMPG.com. On it, he and several thousand other Americans have developed a set of driving and car maintenance techniques to squeeze all the miles they can out of every gallon.

Gerdes begins each trip by coasting down his driveway, then down the street for a block or two.

He says he knows he infuriates some other drivers, like the tailgaters he calls "proctologists" or the speed demons he calls "mad rabbits," but he continues like that, gliding silently when he can, turning the engine on only when he has to -- even in traffic.

"When you go to a red light and you're going to sit for two minutes, shut your engine off," Gerdes said.

Hypermilers also recommend filling your tires to maximum pressure and using lightweight synthetic oil.

"Average driver in this is paying $3.89 a gallon to travel 25 miles. I'm paying $2, maybe $2.10 to travel the same 25 miles," Gerdes said.

Gerdes, who does not visit the gas pumps as often as the rest of us, admits that shutting the engine off while moving might be illegal in some jurisdictions, but he says it shouldn't be.

He points to the fact that the Prius and other full hybrid vehicles do the same thing automatically.

Hello All: Before attempting an advanced technique (of many) lake a FAS (shutting down the Engine and keying back to Ignition-II while cruising down the road) so you have Air Bags, ABS, your steering is NOT locked and you even have power brakes for a few pumps, read what is offered before preaching about what does and does not work. There are other considerations for other vehicles that this should not be attempted in but in a 2 minute piece, you cannot go over hours worth of discussion or clinic time. Last night she allowed a nice 55.3 mpg run from O'Hare to my home if that helps :) Follow the links for more information. Good Luck Wayne Gerdes - Owner/Admin - CleanMPG

Bill, the article said nothing about him turning off the engine to coast... only when he's at a stoplight. Coasting is as simple as taking your foot off the gas pedal!

9/11 happened and then he is doing this stuff? What a dumbo & a cheapskate! 9/11 was a setup! The only way mideast oil was involved in 9/11 was the fact that Bush & Cheaney needed a reason to invade & take over the Middle East oil so; they planned/organized the events of 9/11 just as stated in the PNAC (Project for New American Century document that the right-wing fanatics created.)

just like a button. it will eventually wear down.

Doesn't it create a lot of wear & tear on the engine to keep turning it off and restarting it constantly?

I can't believe you all just told people to turn off their engines while going down the road... for one thing the steering wheel will lock up and people are going to die because they heard your news report and turn off their engines when they are doing 70mph down 75...

Sounds all good and well except turning the car engine off to coast.Alot ot vehicles ignitions and steering lock-up when that is done.I would be very careful when doing say 35 mph and deliberatly locking my steering wheel not to mention the power brake system. Just something to consider.
