BONHAM, Tex. -- It’s been on the city's water tower for the past fifty years, but soon the famous Bonham Purple Warrior logo could be gone forever. There are no plans to paint the symbol on the city's new water tower, a decision some residents and former alumni are trying to change.

It has overlooked downtown Bonham for half a century, but it’s time keeping watch over the Warrior faithful could soon be over.

Barbara Cox graduated from Bonham High School back in 1961, and except for 18 months, she has spent her whole life in Bonham.

That’s why she was surprised to hear the Warrior logo she's grown to love would not be painted on the city's new water tower.

"We’ve always had pride in Bonham and in Bonham High School and that is a sense of pride, the Warrior Head," Cox says.

"I couldn’t believe it."

Cox isn't alone. As word spread, alumni and former residents from across the country started calling in and e-mailing city officials asking them to reconsider the decision and keep the Warrior Sprirt alive.

"I don’t think many of us thought that people were that passionate about it, it was nice but as you can tell today, it is faded ten years later, but apparently they are," Bonham mayor Roy Floyd says.

After some adjustments to the city's water lines earlier this year, a new water tower had to be installed at the intersection of Highway 121 and Highway 56.

City officials say the contract for the new tower calls for it to be painted with the words "City Of Bonham" on it but not with the Warrior Head, an oversight they say they are trying to correct and one that could end up costing upwards of $10,000.

"It’s not something that you just run up there and paint on there. You’re way high in the air, and it has to be large, and it takes a great deal of work to do that," Floyd says.

Floyd and other city officials are working with residents to come up with a plan to raise the money, but for now all those who bleed purple like Barbara will have to wait and see.

let's ask all the boys and girls in iraq what they think of this important issue.they might be a little busy fightin for there lives to worry about somthing as important as a water tower.

bonham resident,Do you feel better now?..ok great..now,I feel that I need to comment on here to point out how ridiculous the whole situation is and how Bottom resindents arent going to be happy no matter what the outcome is because they are a bunch whiners that need to get a life and find something better to do with their life besides causing drama for no good reason. Ok that was my 2 cents again...thanks for listening!

If you dont live in bonham what buisness do you have talking about it and what difference does it make if its on our water tower if you dont like it DONT COME TO BONHAM!! We dont need your hate in our town any way!

Posted by: Dookey Location: Shermboro on May 16, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Amen Pronative! I bet they wouldn't get away with this in Oklahoma, where Native American pride runs a little deeper. You know they did away with the Savages, right? Also, it has already been mentioned and no one has rebutted, it is very similar to slang for the male organ. So you go ahead, you Purple Headed Warriors, and display your mascot with a $10,000 painting on your water tower.

They say you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. So I got rid of everything so I could see what I had.

Pronative, the people of Bottom have no life and just need something to gripe about. If the city did go ahead and pint it on the tower then they would be complaining about wasting tax money. Its a no win situation, hopefully something new will come up and they will forget about this and move on to something else. Its just a matter of having nothing better to do, the only reason I even comment on here is to point out how ridiculous the whole situation is.C'mon Bottom is this what its really coming down to? Get a life please!!

Posted by: PRONATIVE Location: NATIVE AMERICA on May 15, 2008 at 09:54 PM
Since when did you rednecks in "Bottom, TX" start honoring the Native American? There is no such thing as a Purple Warrior in the Native American culture. I doubt you teach anything about Native culture in your schools, except to say that all Natives are the same. Your mascot is a joke and so is your logo. At least you won't see Natives honoring anything about "Bottom, TX!"

Bonham Warrior (class of 76). I remember growing up in Bonham when the most important thing was the local teams. That was what made Bonham the proudest school in the district. That sense of pride transferred throughout the town. Friday nights were a sight to see. The water tower was just a small symbol of that pride, but a very visible one. I no longer live in Bonham but I will always bleed Purple and White. The question shouldn't be who needs to do what or even how much it would cost. 10,000 seems like a relatively easy amount to come up with. If all the Bonhi students and exes contributed just $5.00 to the cause and challenged the community to match the funds we could make this happen. It's once again time to show some Purple Pride.

Did you notify the police on their non-emergency number? If so they could issue the owner a citation for mistreatment of animals.

Posted by: Concerned Location: Near Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 06:25 PM
I am confused. You are more concerned over the tower having your Logo on it than you are over the puppies, birds etc that were being sold at your Trade Days recently. I went there for the first time and so all those poor puppies, birds, etc sitting in cages in the hot sun. Some had no water and sitting in their own Urine.. A puppy was bought there saturday so dehydrated, taken to a vet on Sunday and passed away. Who cared for them. Please don't get me wrong, I believe in putting your logo there, but city officials need to look into people that sell animals at these trade day weekends. It broke my heart and made me angry. I am a Proud Texan. Proud to call it my home. Please take pride in your city and don't allow animals to be treated like this agian.. Thank you

(love you) Longtime, you need to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk but, something tells me even though your "job" prevents you, if you did have the gumption, you wouldn't get the votes anyway... I wish you could and then maybe you would be able to see the big picture instead of the small one.

Posted by: Longtime Resident Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 05:30 PM
The personal gain is in reference to the ego trip that the two selfish incumbants im referring to exhibit. They are on a power trip and love the idea of being in control. I did not vote for them. But unfortunately they paint a pretty picture for those who are naive and did vote for them. Taxes have been raised, water rates have gone up, the least they can do is show some pride and dignity by displaying a symbol of our city that we can be proud of. I'd like to see something as I drive through town besides vacant, run down houses and buildings as I dodge the pot holes in the city streets while en route to get my front end alligned.

The alumni will raise 10K without a problem. I guarantee a warrior on the tower.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Bonham sucks!!! If you live in Bonham and are soooo proud to live there, then clean it up!!! Bonham is depressing and just plain YUCK!!! I hate it when I have to go there. Spend the money on improving the city not on a freaking water tower. The water is YUCK too!!!!

Posted by: Mr. Rayburn Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Apparently, the the community's opionion DOES matter, since they ARE the ones that voted on these so-called "selfish" incumbants. And, to what personal gain could you be referring to since none of the council members keep a dime of what they are paid. It is and always has been returned to the city's fund. As for the Warrior head, that's a pointless waste of tax payer's money. Maybe we should just suggest raising taxes for this purpose, then I am sure all the ridiculousness over this paintjob would surely be quieted.

AAAWWWW! Can you feel the love here! Especially between Longtime Resident and Mr Rayburn? So nice to see good neighbors loving their community.... Brings a tear don't it???

Posted by: Longtime Resident Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 01:10 PM
Well Mr. Rayburn I have actually attended several city council meetings and have spoken my mind. Because of my line of work I cannot run for office but if I could, believe me, I would. I would love to see the city pay for the Warrior symbol. That would show that the community's opinion does matter and it would be nice of some of our selfish incumbant city council members to do something for the good of the city without there being personal gain. I am a obiding tax payer who is a registered voter and votes regularly. Because of that, I have a right to speak my opinion. I was born and raised here. So when it comes to moving on...I don't think so.

Posted by: Mr. Rayburn Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Hey Long-time resident, either run for office or move on. I bet you go to every city council meeting and let your opinions be voiced, right?. I am sure then being the dedicated Bonham citizen that we know you are, that you have no doubt heard about the new/cleaner water that the city will be providing, the better streets that are and have already been laid (and not in front of council members homes, I might add--SHOCKING!) and the countless other things the city does for even it's most ungrateful residents. It is NOT the responsibilty of the city council to WASTE tax payer money on a new paint job. If they had decided to do it, YOU would have griped over the wastefullness of it....Let me suggest something to you, go get a life!

Posted by: ANNOYED By IDIOTS! Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 11:22 AM
It is NOT the city of Bonham's responsibility to have a "custom logo" painted on the water tower. That is RIDICULOUS! If the exes want to raise the money in donations that is great, but the cities job is to provide water, no esthetics fo people to see when they drive around. Also, if you want to instill a sense of pride back in Bonham and it's schools, START WITH THE SCHOOLS! They are all in serious need of help.

Posted by: Jess on May 15, 2008 at 11:20 AM
The art teacher at my old high school did the artwork ALL over our school. She did the gym floor, the walls, etc. It looks SOOOO GOOOOOD. Instead of having to pay $10,000 to someone else, why not have your art teacher draw up something and have the city put it up there. We had people climb our water tower and sign, paint, whatever all the time. It can be done.

Posted by: Joe Bob Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 11:02 AM
I always thunked that Bonham's mascot was the redneck. p.s. Someone keeps killing my cats.

Posted by: Proud of Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 09:32 AM
OK, Whipper Snapper! So glad you are not from Bonham! And I really feel sorry for the area/town you are from. Sounds like you are one of the OLD geezers you sit on their front porch complaining about everything. Plus what do you care what the people of Bonham decide to spend their hard earned money on since you aren't from there. GO HOME! And let us decide what the right decision is for OUR TOWN.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sherman on May 15, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Eww. Maybe they should drop the purple part. After all, " purple warrior" is slang for penis...

Posted by: Flabergasted Location: Bonham on May 15, 2008 at 07:52 AM
"City of Bonham" appears more and more often on EVERYTHING these days. Like we don't know the water tower is in the city of Bonham! "BONHAM" and the Warrior logo will be clear, concise, and to the point. Show some PURPLE PRIDE!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 06:37 AM
For your information, Whipper Snapper, my understanding is that some of the residents are working on getting donations for this. I'm not sure where you got your information about tax money. And I notice that so far the only two intelligent comments on here are from Bonham residents. I'll bet they're as thankful as you are that you are not from Bonham.

Posted by: billy Location: oklahoma on May 15, 2008 at 05:05 AM
Get real people, why pay $10,000 on a warrior head. That money could be better spent!!!!!!!!!! Look at the last one it is obvious that there wasn't much pride by how faded it is.

Posted by: Dean Location: Newton, KS on May 15, 2008 at 04:23 AM
I graduated from BHS in 1951 and that is one of the first things I look for when I drive back into Bonham. Makes no difference where it's located, it needs to be on the tower. This is not negotiable.

Posted by: todd Location: bonham on May 14, 2008 at 10:58 PM
hey whippersnapper, why don't u kiss this warriors a_ _!! we wouldn't let crap like you live in bonham!

Posted by: Longitme resident Location: Bonham on May 14, 2008 at 09:54 PM
The city does not have to raise $10,000. They have the money in the budget. The city officials are doing now what they have done for years and thats not putting it where it needs to go. They spend very little on the police department regarding hiring more officers and increasing their salaries. The fire department has to use grants or redo a building on their own time to make a new fire station. The city streets are in poor condition unless you live on the same street as a city council member. The least they could do is provide he money for the Warrior symbol to be painted on the new water tower. That's our city's symbol. Note to city council: Key words "OUR CITY". You all seem to forget that you are elected not appointed!

Posted by: BOB Location: BONHAM on May 14, 2008 at 08:57 PM
We can do the same logo as the old one. Just have Bonham and the Warrior head. Saying Bonham Warriors doesn't need to be on there. Lets put pride in Bonham and our schools. Lets support both. It will be sad when the old one comes down, but when you are coming from hwy 121 the first thing you see if the new tower. Let us represent this town with honor. We can have the warrior head and the word Bonham under the logo.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bonham on May 14, 2008 at 08:08 PM
I have lived here now for 10 yrs and I think the water tower needs to say Bonham Warriors? People will know it is the city of Bonham if it says Bonham Warriors! Geez what are these city people thinking?

Posted by: WhipperSnapper Location: Not Bonham,Thank God on May 14, 2008 at 06:51 PM
Thats a warrior?, all these years I thought it was bird crap or some paint peeling off the tower!I cant believe people in Bonham are actually concerned, you can barely see it all these years, and no one cared, but now lets spend some tax money to paint a new one...lmao..
