A Michigan man is taking a long walk to raise awareness for cerebral palsy - on stilts. Twenty-five-year-old Neil Sauter of Blissfield, Michigan, started his journey at the southeast corner of Michigan, and plans to trek his way to the western edge of the Upper Peninsula.
Sauter plans to travel an astonishing 830 miles at 20 miles a day, all while on stilts. Sauter, who deals daily with the effects of cerebral palsy himself, has raised $4,500 so far, and his end goal is to bring in $10,000.
It's rainy, it's cloudy, not the ideal weather for any kind of hike. Let alone one that goes more than 800 miles bunt don't tell that to this guy. Meet Neil. He's walking across Michigan on stilts!!
Along a quiet stretch of road, Neil Sauter can't help but stand out, clicking down the street in three foot stilts. He's covered well over 100 miles.
“I get a lot of people that do double takes,” Sauter says.
It’s welcome attention to the 25-year-old Michigan man who is raising money for the group United Cerebral Palsy.
“I've been going about 20 miles a day.”
He's raised $4,500, and he is going for $10,000. Each dollar actually equals four due to a matching federal grant along each daily trek. He runs into witnesses like Deb Whitelaw who take a break from their day to hear his story
“I stopped and I waited it took him a little while and I said I need to go talk to him.”
After listening, she can't help but be inspired. Neil himself was born with cerebral palsy.
“It affects my legs, causing them to turn inward when I walk,” Neil says.
It just makes his journey on stilts all the more daunting and all the more impressive.
“I really want people to see that no mater what challenges are ahead of them if they work hard, they can rise above anything.”
