ARDMORE, Okla. -- One of the nation's most prominent senior advocacy groups, the AARP, is asking tough questions in Ardmore this Thursday night. Robin Beal met with local and state leaders to find out why so many of them made a special train ride from Oklahoma City.
The delegation arrived on the Heartland Flyer shortly after ten o’clock Thursday morning, calling it the “DWF Express,” as in "Divided We Fail."
It is a catchy slogan that the AARP has come up with to get people on board. Both literally and figuratively, they are being very vocal about a need for bipartisanship in an election year and encouraging people to demand action from their elected officials on two specific issues: the exorbitant costs of healthcare in this county and long-term financial security.
Organizers say it is time to end the gridlock in Washington and cut across party lines to find a solution to what has become one big problem for everyone.
"Many Oklahomans are only one major illness or one accident away from financial ruin. You really cannot separate affordable healthcare from financial security, because healthcare costs have skyrocketed the past few years, two, three, four times the rate of inflation. We need to get a handle on this," Robert Bristow, Oklahoma state president of the AARP, says.
The meeting is at the Ardmore Convention Center on Thursday night. A lively panel discussion on those very issues will follow dinner. It is open to the public and there is no cost if you would like to go.
