GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- The price of prescription medication continues to rise, which is why Grayson County is finding a cheaper solution when it comes to keeping inmates healthy.
Last year alone, Grayson County officials say they spent around $124,000 in prescription medication for their inmates and juvenile detainees.
Now thanks to the suggestion of the jail nurse, officials hope to switch to another provider, Mexor, which could save the county close to $30,000 each year, but still provide inmates with all the medication they need.
"We're trying to curb our costs and find ourselves a little more structured that if ultimately we end up with a new jail and a bigger population that we would be able to benefit from a greater cost savings," Grayson County purchasing agent Jeff Schneider says
Officials say Texas State Law requires them to adequately provide all necessary meds to prisoners.
