DURANT, Okla. -- Summer is just around the corner, which means outdoor celebrations and vacations and also the kickoff of the Click It or Ticket campaign encouraging people to buckle their seat belt.

About 20 officers from over 11 agencies set up a check point on Main Street in Durant on Monday, ticketing those not using seat belts. Officers say this is the time of year when traffic accidents increase, so they are out in force to help protect you.

"We're out here, enforcing the law, to make a difference, hopefully in someone's life and to make them understand that it is important to wear seat belts," Captain Paul Timmons of the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office says.

Officers say using a seat belt is the easiest way to protect yourself in a traffic accident.

Loves Our Officer, I ain't gonna invite Rutherford and his crooked cops over to my house. Let him go over to the SOSU QB's house and get his doughnuts, coffee, and whatever else.

The ignorance quotient has risen to dangerous levels in this thread. I guess it's good to let the functional illiterates have a shot at whining about seat belts, ticket quotas, Big Brother, etc.... just buckle the doggone belt and pull your heads out. I have a brother-in law that sounds like you folks, but then again he's from Mississippi, so that may have something to do with it.....but I digress. If you don't like the law, write to your local state representative. Until then, feel free to pay out 120 bucks or so every time a cop stops you for not wearing a seat belt. If you like spending your money that way, go for it.........

thank ya'll for alway being there when people need you. iam proud to stand be side all of ya'll. and as for all the donut remarks get off of it people when you stop eating them then you can say something. instead why don't you make them some donuts and fix coffee invite them over and get to know them and see not all of then are bad. and next time you have a problem if they are so bad don't call them. thank everyone of ya'll for doing your job.

Posted by: chuck Location: durant on May 21, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Get off the Donuts. police officer do a hard job that affects there family and benifits there comunity, they answer the call for help any time of day or night. Most of the Police officers I know make less that $25,000 a year and they risk there life daily. So insted of complaing why dont you go shak there hand and say thank you for being there. Most of you that are complaing probley dont obey the law anyway, you have a choice if you dont like the laws run for office and change them or move to another country.

Posted by: Durant Location: Durant on May 21, 2008 at 02:55 PM
For every 10 tickets they give out, they get a dozen donuts.

Maybe when you get a call with one of these so call "idiots" on the other end telling you that you child has been an accident but the only reason they are alive is the seatbelt they were wearing you will change your tune a bit. That happened to us last year, our son was the passenger in a head on collision. He did break his collar bone in 2 places but if he had not had his seatbelt on he would have been a trophy ornament on the other persons hood. I actually work in the office of our local PD and know that these campaigns are handed down from the state so they are not out there trying to meet some kind of quota. They are out there doing their job. Now all you have to do is yours. When you got your drivers license you had to pass a test and part of that test was to learn to put your seatbelt on, in fact I almost bet that was part of the written test. So if you have such a problem with it I suggest you just don't get behind the wheel of a vehicle. They do still make bicycles.

I wish they would write tickets to speeders & tail-gators along with the click it or ticket campaign.

Posted by: Texas Location: Sadler on May 21, 2008 at 11:52 AM
I think it should be your choice on wearing a seat belt. My dad was in a horrible accident and if he had his seat belt on he would not have made it. I believe that when God says it is your time its your time seat belt or no seat belt.

Posted by: money on May 21, 2008 at 09:53 AM
I have seen just as many studies that point to lives being lost. Because of seat belts. As there are that suggest seat belts save lives. Seat belt laws have nothing to do with saving lives. They are just another example of the big brother mentality. Also another way for the State to make money!

It isn't about quotas, or cops 'trying' to catch someone doing something wrong. It's about cops enforcing the laws we pay them to enforce. Pure and simple. If you obey the laws, wear your seatbealt, have insurance, yada, yada, yada, then what do you have to worry about? My life was saved by a seat belt in a terrible accident a few years ago. Yes, I had injuries that required surgery, but had it not been for that belt I wouldn't have been that fortunate. I would have been dead. The laws are there for a reason. Follow them and you have no problems. Then thank the officers for doing the job we are paying them to do!

If they want to write these tickets they need to be giving out tickets for these idiots that don't have a helmet on when riding a motorcycle.

Posted by: kelly on May 20, 2008 at 05:17 PM
some people must really be brainwashed enough to think they are concerned at all about our safety...it is all about getting their ticket quota..

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sherman on May 20, 2008 at 12:33 PM
This law is for the officers too, they think they can get by with anything and not get caught

Posted by: concerned Location: bryan county on May 20, 2008 at 11:00 AM
i like seeing cops out doing these things. if it wasnt for morons who don pay attention, they would not have to be out there. the guts you people have. these men risk thier life every day going to work to make sure we are safe. these laws are made because some people are too stupid to protect thierself so the government has to do it for them. these officers are trying to help you, and comments like that are posted. they are the first ones to call when a child moloester moves in next door, or someone rear ends you. why not spit on your grandmother when her gravy has lumps. i personaly lost my father in an accident because he was not wearing his seatbelt. officers of texoma, your doing a great job!!! keep up the good work!!!!!

If you've ever had "head to windshield" contact you learn to wear your seatbelt REAL quick!

Posted by: George Location: Bush on May 20, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Hey Bob Dole, If you had taken the time to listen (as over 1/2 of you didnt) it's an effort to save lives. It's really somthing when the police make the news all of you armchair "true to your community" citizens, slam the police, but when you need them or they are scraping you or your family members' body off the side of the road, man is it not great to have the POLICE

Posted by: p Location: marietta on May 19, 2008 at 11:14 PM
i think the police should not be able to write tickets for that it should be your own opinion if you want to save a life..my aunt was in a accident and if she would have had her seatbelt on it would have cracked her collao bone .. so it can also hurt you to.. ohp and police agencies to need to loosen up .. i have a card that says i dont have to wear one i have had 5 neck surgies so it really doestn pertain to me anyway..

What is a cop's dounut of choice? With or without sprinkles?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 19, 2008 at 07:44 PM
400 lb. gorilla- ever heard of sobriety checks? If you have your DL, insurance, registration, etc. up to date and are sober, why are you worried? Were you nailed by a checkpoint like this once before? Ain't paranoia fun? Just buckle the freaking belt- saves you from going out the windshield of your car in a collision, or perhaps folks like to bounce like rubber balls on asphalt, breaking every bone in their body. "Constitutional right" for a seat belt? Don't remember reasing that in the Constitution, but then again that document (which I am greateful for) seems to be the refuge for anyone looking for an excuse.

Posted by: rebel on May 19, 2008 at 06:25 PM
why are they not out writing tickets on 82 ???????????????

Posted by: bob dole Location: durant on May 19, 2008 at 05:20 PM
I just dont know why the other towns were here. I mean if it is that big of a deal whay didnt Caddo do it there instead of 1 of them being here. Or why the only Bennington cop was here. Do it in your town. I understand the OHP being here. But the only reason the smaller towns cop were here is so that they could be on TV.

Posted by: 400 lb Gorilla Location: Sherman on May 19, 2008 at 04:29 PM
Well...Here's my 2 cents. I would most definitely encourage EVERYONE to wear they're seat belts. I use mine, not because it's "The Law", but because I feel safer with it on! But...because I also believe that every American has very specific liberties and freedoms, you should not be forced to do anything that would violate your constitutional rights. If you choose NOT to use seat belts, then you shouldn't have to. And when law enforcement sets up road blocks, are they just checking for seat belt usage? I'm guessing that they're also asking for license, registration, insurance, etc... Before long, they'll be asking for "Your Papers Please". (thanks in part to the Patriot Act). The road blocks are totally unnecessary. It's a waste of our time and money, considering the cost of fuel. They should do it the old fashioned way, by observance. Of course my view on non-mandatory seat belts does not apply to children under 18.

The police are just doing their jobs. They don't set policy, they enforce the law. These donut remarks are disrepectful to men and women who risk their lives quite frequently to keep you safe. If you don't like the seat belt law, write your congressman.

Posted by: Me Location: Denison on May 19, 2008 at 03:15 PM
"Anonymous" you're right, a total waste. If everyone would obey the law they wouldn't have to be wasting their time on this. Back in my day when most everyone drove the speed limit and drove with their head on their shoulders instead stuck up you know where, seat belts wasn't needed. When people do more and more stupid things they have to make more laws to cover them. Why do you people have a problem with the police eating donuts? I see thousands of people going in to donut shops that are not police. Doesn't every job have breaks for "donuts"? Who you gonna call if someone breaks into your house or runs into the back of your car cause they are speeding, the Police or a greeter at WalMart? Let's see you do their job for what they get paid. I drink coffee and have donuts everyday and I'm not a Police. People think a bit. DUH!!!!

Posted by: important on May 19, 2008 at 03:14 PM
This is important because it costs $$$$ to work the awful wrecks where people don't wear their seatbelts. Also, if you hit someone not wearing their seatbelt, then yes it's your fault that you hit them but because they weren't wearing their seatbelt, you and your insurance company are now paying out more dollars because of their ignorance in not wearing a seatbelt. Bottom line, why risk it, it's really no big deal!!!!!!!

Posted by: Former cop Location: durant on May 19, 2008 at 03:13 PM
I think it is a good idea to do the click it or ticket, they do save lives. Get off the cops back for doing there job. If you want to complain then do it to your family I am sure they wont mind. To all the cops keep up the good work and wear out those citation books. Thanks to all the cops for the good job

Total waste of law enforcement.

Posted by: resident Location: sherman on May 19, 2008 at 01:02 PM
I believe wearing a seatbelt should be a choice not a law. Why don't school buses have seatbelts? and motorcycles if you want to you can wear a helmet if you don't you don't have to. FYI i choose to wear my seatbelt.
