Kids Run Wild in Gainesville Maze

10-24-05 – A local family has created a field of dreams, but it’s not for baseball lovers. The Patrick family’s Pumpkin Patch and Maze Craze draws kids of all ages to its wide open spaces and winding paths through corn fields.

The pumpkin patch was just an idea this time last year, when Peggy Patrick’s daughter saw a maze in her northern hometown and imagined a similar creation on her parents’ acreage in Gainesville.

The Patricks did a little research and set to work in April, planting for the first time on their property. The 6-acre field of Sudan was ready to be cut a few months later. They called in a professional maze cutter to make the design in the 12-foot crops: a pumpkin cowboy riding an armadillo.

Beside the maze, kids can also play on slides and swings, and pick out their very own pumpkin from the patch. Since advertising locally this summer, Peggy says several schools and churches signed up for field trips during the week.

Public hours for the Pumpkin Patch are Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 1pm – 5pm, flash light night in the maze is Friday and Saturday, 7pm – 11pm. There will be a special Trick-Or-Treat night in the maze on Halloween.

The cost for admission is $5.00 per person for the maze; some activities are an additional fee. Kids three and under receive free admission. Group rates are available.
