10-24-05 - A 21-year-old woman was charged with murder Monday in the death of her newborn daughter whose corpse was found in a suitcase in her bathroom.
Jacqueline Lee Reich was charged with one count of murder and one count of injury to a child. She did not enter a plea. Magistrate court Judge Patricia Hernandez set bond at $1 million on the murder charge and $250,000 on the injury to a child charge.
Reich's stepfather found the baby Friday and took it to the Port Isabel Police Department. Police said the infant was in a plastic bag inside the suitcase and may have been dead for a month.
Reich told investigators she had been unaware of her pregnancy, Sheriff Omar Lucio said.
Chief Sheriff's Deputy Gus Reyna said the baby had part of its umbilical cord still attached and had no apparent signs of injury.
Olmito is about 245 miles southeast of San Antonio.
