GRAYSON COUNTY, TX - The Grayson County Sheriff's office is warning residents of a new scam.

Deputies say victims will get a call on their cell phone. The caller will ask them to punch in a series of numbers.

Then they ask for the VIN number of their car, claiming they needed to renew the warranty coverage.

Lieutenant David Hawley says the call originates from Costa Rica and hitting any numbers on your phone opens the up the line to long distance charges.

"By warning people of this possible scam, hopefully nobody will fall victim," says Lt. Hawley.

Lieutenant Hawley says if you think you may have been scammed, check with your phone company to make sure you won't be charged for any calls you didn't make.

Sorry- I was just coming back from the bank after depositing my guaranteed check from Nigeria. What phone scam? LOL.....this is why I have caller ID- if it's a toll-free, anonymous, or private call, they won't get answered. If they want to talk to me, leave a message. If not, they can pound sand.

I have been getting these calls also, they are calling while I am at work. I have answered the calls twice today and I explained to the lady that I believe it is a scam and she became rude and telling me it wasn't, I don't even own a vehicle and haven't had a Drivers License in 10 years and she is asking me about Warranty?! I explained all this to her and she said I was being rude so I told her to snuff off and she said it right back! Ligit Phone people aren't allowed to curse?! I am checking with my phone company now to see if I have been charged anything because I hit the 1 button to speak with a live representative.

Has anyone else been getting calls from 999-999-9999? This number rings on my cell several times a day. Needless to say, I don't answer it. Is this one in the same with the scam noted in this story?

I've been getting these calls for a couple weeks now. It tells me to press "9" to be removed from the list (doing so would open me up to long-distance charges, I'm sure!) Luckily it always comes up as "Private" on caller ID, the only call that ever comes up that way, so I can ignore it.
