GRAYSON COUNTY, TX - The Grayson County Sheriff's office is warning residents of a new scam.

Deputies say victims will get a call on their cell phone. The caller will ask them to punch in a series of numbers.

Then they ask for the VIN number of their car, claiming they needed to renew the warranty coverage.

Lieutenant David Hawley says the call originates from Costa Rica and hitting any numbers on your phone opens the up the line to long distance charges.

"By warning people of this possible scam, hopefully nobody will fall victim," says Lt. Hawley.

Lieutenant Hawley says if you think you may have been scammed, check with your phone company to make sure you won't be charged for any calls you didn't make.
