Trooper Shoots Man Fleeing from Crash Scene

11-16-05 - A trooper shot and wounded a man who ran from a stolen truck after the vehicle crashed during a high-speed chase Tuesday night, authorities said.

The man was not identified by police late Tuesday. He was shot once in the head and taken to Northwest Texas Hospital, Department of Public Safety Trooper Wayne Beighle said in a story in Wednesday's Amarillo Globe-News.

Authorities declined to identify the trooper who fired the shot.

The chase began around 6:30 p.m. when a Dumas police officer caught up to a vehicle that was reported stolen from a truck stop. The truck sped away on southbound U.S. 287, reaching speeds of about 100 to 120 mph, Beighle said.

Troopers caught up to the truck in Amarillo around 7 p.m. There, the driver lost control during a turn and the truck hit a stump and a fence. The driver got out of the truck and ran about 100 yards as troopers ordered him to stop, Beighle said.

"At some point, a shot was fired," he said.

Detectives from the Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit and a Texas Ranger were investigating the shooting. Authorities were trying to determine if there was a passenger in the truck.
