New Charges in Elderly Crime Case

11-18-05 - A nursing home owner in Tishomingo faces new charges after being arrested this summer for stealing money from an elderly woman. Police used hidden cameras to gain new evidence.

51-year-old Bill Don Hix was arrested back in July, charged with grand larceny and embezzlement, stealing thousands from a 93-year-old woman. He's been the co-owner of Hillcrest Nursing Home in Tishomingo for two years, and a judge now says there is enough evidence against him to stand trial.

It's been four months since Hix was arrested, but police say they never stopped their investigation. During today's preliminary hearing the court heard testimony from the 93-year-old. She stated that while in the hospital last March, Hix came to her, took her keys, broke into her home and stole over $10,000 from a security box. And although Hix does deny the claim, authorities say they have taped conversations that say otherwise.

According to a search warrant affidavit Tishomingo police installed a tape recorder on the victim's phone and a wireless camera in her apartment. During one conversation the victim tells Hix she's going to the police, he responds by stating he will contact DHS and hangs up on her.

Today the judge also added more charges. Along with the grand larceny Bill Hix will also face grand larceny from a dwelling and 2nd degree burglary. The judge is also reviewing the embezzlement charge.

Bill Hix befriended the 93-year-old victim while her sister was a resident of the Hillcrest Nursing Home.
