Three Injured in Shooting at Reserve Base

12-2-05 - Three sailors were injured in a shooting at a military reserve base Thursday and the gunman was in custody, an official said.

The three were shot at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base at Carswell, base spokeswoman Laura Smith said. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

The gunman was in custody but it wasn't clear if he was one of the injured, Smith said. Base commander Capt. John McCormack said officials believe one sailor shot the two others then turned the weapon on himself.

Military officials were still sorting through other details of the shooting and planned to release a statement Thursday afternoon, Smith said.

Three people from the base were taken to Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital, said spokeswoman Whitney Hoebeke, who declined to provide conditions or details.

Gates to the base, formerly known as Carswell Air Force Base, were closed down briefly following the afternoon shooting but later reopened. Emergency vehicles could be seen surrounding a building near an air traffic control tower on the base.

Nearly 8,000 reservists from the Navy, Air Force, Marines and Texas Air National Guard are assigned to the base.
