Fire Guts Historic Home in Gainesville

12-6-05 - An historic Gainesville home is in ruins after being gutted by a fire while a ten member family could only watch.

One of Gainesville's trademarks are their beautiful historic homes, and for two hour firefighters tried to save one of the city's oldest.

Pam and Roger Purdy lived in a 107 year old home on Denton Street with their seven children. No one was home when the fire started, but the family spotted the fire when they arrived home around 6 p.m. Monday night as flames were coming from a front room.

Within minutes, the flames would spread to the third floor, and it took firefighters more than two hours to douse the fire.

The Purdy family lived in the home for seven years, and they said their family has plenty of places to stay. They are just glad that they weren't ho me when it started.

The fire department does not know what started the fire.
